The LORD answered, "Judah is to go; I have given the land into their hands."~ Judges 1:2
The cycle of sin and salvation
Judges records Israel’s history immediately after the death of Joshua. Now established in the Promised Land, the Israelites waver in their obedience to God and begin to follow the sinful practices of neighboring nations. The resulting cycle of oppression and deliverance clearly reveals the tragic consequences of incomplete commitment to god.
Throughout Israel’s cycle of sin and redemption, God provides deliverers who help to restore peace and spiritual vitality. Deborah serves as a godly example with her servant’s heart, ability to delegate, authoritative leadership and willingness to follow God at any cost (Jdg 4-5). Jael (Jdg 4:17-22) and the woman of Thebez (Jdg 9:50-57) are lesser-known women, but they are still used by God in extraordinary ways to further his plan. The story of Jepthah and his daughter stands as grievous reminder of the consequences of careless promises (Jdg 11:30-40). Samson’s mother reveals the blessings that are available to those who comply with God’s will (Jdg 13), whereas Micah’s mother exposes the misery that accompanies superstition and unfaithfulness (Jdg 17-18). When Samson takes credit for successes that comes from God’s hand, he becomes vulnerable, and Delilah’s seduction leads to his downfall (Jdg 16).
The nation of Israel suffers political and social misery for repeatedly ignoring God’s direct commands. However, not only God’s judgment but also his never – ending love and forgiveness shine through the chapters of Judges.
And what can we learn from the perspective of Marriage??? Well marriage is like a roller coaster ride. There are “up” times and “down” times. Most (if not all) of the “down” times are the result of wanting to do it our way without God’s help. We want to do as we see fit. This book clearly shows what happens when we try to get along without God and what can happen when we turn around and trust God again.
The book of Judges sure has taught me much!! Im sure you will be blessed reading this book. If you want to read it, click here.
