Victory comes through faith in God

In the opening chapter of Joshua, we’re reminded of God’s presence and power as he inspires Joshua to face seemingly insurmountable obstacles with courage. We watch as Rahab, the prostitute with resourcefulness and bravery, assists Israel in its triumph over Jericho ( Jos 2). This unlikely member of the family of God reinforces another lesson from the book of Joshua – that faithfulness to God brings rewards (Jos 14). We smile as Acsah charms her father, Caleb into giving he rand her husband not only a field but also springs to water the field ( Jos 15:13-19). We are amazed at the miracle of the sun standing still (Jos 10) and marvel as the Canaanites’ land is transformed into the Israelites’ land when each tribe is allotted towns, cities and fields (Jos 13-22).

The faithfulness of God is apparent throughout the book of Joshua. As the Israelites begin to put down roots in their new homeland, they shift from a nomadic band of wanderers to a settled community whose existence is totally dependent on God. Although the Israelites are faced with temptations and obstacles Joshua’s strong leadership brings them to success as they rely on and obey God.

In the final chapters of the book, Joshua gathers the people together for his farewell speeches. Knowing their inclination toward disobedience and idolatry, he challenges them to choose whom they will serve (Jos 23-24), an exhortation that’s as fitting for us today as it was for the Israelites thousands of years ago.

Growing grape vines

The most amazing thing about a grape vine is that they take a small amount of space to grow and produces in abundance.I picked up a potted vine from a nursery and was thrilled to get it back home and plant it.

1. Plant the vine in a full - sun, gravelly spot.
2. They need to grow on a support, mine came with one. If u werent as lucky as I was, you would have to construct one that will be able to hold the weight of a fully grown vine.
3. Enrich the soil with compost and slow release fetilizer and plant it like you would any other plant.
4. Graped need to be heavily watered especially while its fruiting.
5. Dont forget to prune them:) Pruning helps to produce the maximum amount of good quality fruit. I researched on the net and its said that, the best time to prune is mid- winter as the canes would be  hardened. Click here to see how to prune your grape vines.

You should plant the grapes east to west for the best growth. We've planted 8 plants at our place along with blueberry, strawberry, gooseberry and we're always on the lookout for more. Make sure you train your vines to make picking easier. You can also train them on an overhead trellis to create shade and make picking easier. Even the leaves and vines are useful for crafts.

September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

September is the National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. I wanted to take the oportunity to raise awareness of the risk factors and signs and symptoms of this deadly disease. Its proven that Ovarian cancer causes more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system, yet it accounts for only about 3 percent of all cancers in women.Ovarian cancer is cancer that starts in the ovaries. The ovaries are the female reproductive organs that produce eggs.                                        Early-stage ovarian cancer can cause symptoms, although these symptoms also occur with many other conditions. Heres what we did to make a mess :)

 Papier mache eggs

Blowing out.
'Blowing' an egg has been known and used for a very long time. Make two small holes on either side of the egg and used a straw to blow out the contents( We had scrambled eggs later for snack time).
Rinse the shell with clean water.Apply at least two layers of paper strips to the exterior. Let the kids decorate it the way they like'em :) They made different colored eggs.

After their writing reading, lapbooking we went to the bird farm near our house. The people there were very friendly they showed us how they breed their birds and explained it to us. Sharon loved the tour:) Jason was a little intimidated by the numerous birds chirping all around him hehe. he said 'Birdie screaming help help ... let them out!!' Hmmm it does have some truth to it.

DEUTERONOMY

Behold, the LORD thy God hath set the land before thee: go up and possess it, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath said unto thee; fear not, neither be discouraged.~Deuteronomy 1:21

 Obedience brings blessing; disobedience brings punishment

                                             Deuteronomy restates the covenant of love between God and his people issued earlier in Exodus. As he prepares to die and relinquish leadership to Joshua, Moses delivers three sermons. Each sermon reminds this new generation of Israelites of the journey from Egypt, through the desert, to Canaan. In this final words, Moses renews the Israelites’ covenant with God by reminding them of what God has done in the past, specifying how God wants them to live in the present, and announcing what God promises for their future.
                                        Woven throughout the historic events of Deuteronomy are opportunities to look at life’s choices from God’s perspective. We are cautioned to keep our focus on God and to not allow idolatry to take hold in our lives ( Dt 4). We are reminded to love God in everything we do, say or think and to pass this information along to our children (Dt 6). We learn that even the little things in our lives matter to God, and we are urged to avoid practices that, though acceptable in our society, may be detestable in God’s eyes (Dt 18).
                                          Moses ends Deuteronomy with a song and a blessing (Dt 32-33). These final words urge the Israelites-and-us to learn from the past and to prepare for the future by choosing to walk in covenant faith with God.

Pretty!!

                                    Dad got my kids a bird feeder, since then there have been lotsa visitors in my garden lately. My kids just love it. Mr and Mrs Pigeons have also made their home on our roof....... We can hear them chirp in the mornings and its soooooooo soothing.... feels like in the middle of nature:). Of course, I am happy to let them stay for free. :)

Heres a pretty paper purse for you.
                            I first saw these beautiful paper purses and bags here. I immedietly fell in love with them and I wanted to try and make my own ..... at first I kinda struggled with the right measurements and it took a while but, it turned out to be soooooooooo cute..... i think it was well worth the time. What do you think??? I made some thank you cards to go with it.

I used my cricut machine to cut out the pieces. I love my cricut machine........dont you??? If you are thinking about getting one, dont think anymore JUST GET IT :) Chao for now see you tomorrow in my garden :)

Piping hot spice infused Rasam

Prep & Cooking: 15 mts

Serves 4 persons

Cuisine: Tamil Nadu

                          

                                                My mom lives in the East coast and I in the west :(((( and whenever I miss my mom ( especially her super yummy food) I make this soup. Just one word to describe it YUMMM! It just explodes with flavor in your mouth and you will love it. In India we have it with hot steamed rice, after every meal. Its one of the last courses of the meal and yes, theres lotsa 'courses' before and after this one LOL.

                                               This recipe is very simple and as I said it bfore YUMMM! It will leave your kitchen smelling awesome as you use the spice infused oil to season your dish.

Ingredients

Tomato ripe -4 cubed

water-2 cups

Pepper powder - 1/2 tsp
Cumin powder - 1 tsp Salt to taste
Garlic pods - 2

Seasoning

 
Mustard seeds -1/4 spoon
Oil - 2 tbs
Asafoetida - a pinch
Curry leaves - one stalk

Garnish

Coriander leaves - 5 stalks chopped

 

Procedure:

• Boil the tomatoes until fully cooked and mushy and use a spatula to crush the tomatoes.
• Add crushed garlic pods, cumin powder, pepper powder and salt. 
• Heat oil in a small saucepan. 
• Add mustard seeds, asafoetida powder and curry leaves.
• After the seeds splutter, pour the seasoning over the rasam.
• Boil the tomato mixture till it is hot and bubbly. 
• Sprinkle with chopped corriander leaves and serve piping hot.

What is emotional abuse???

                 I was watching a television program and I heard about this..... I have heard in the news and watched movies on physical abuse but emotional abuse???? Well I wanted to know more about it and began googling....It really concerns me a great deal to know that sooo many women are emotionally and physically abused each day!!! Despite its everyday occurrence, few of us recognize it, identify it or even do anything about it.
                 Emotional abuse leaves few or no physical scars. The victims dont suffer any broken bones, or bruise or spilled blood. But those hurt describe it as the most painful and destructive form of domestic violence.

               The common question the victim may ask is, Am I being emotionally abused??? Take a moment to consider these questions. Did you think all this was okay????

• Does your spouse enjoy degrading you, shaming you,criticize you, humiliate you, or undermine your self-esteem??

• Do you feel that you can't discuss with your partner what is bothering you? Does it always lead to an argument??
• Does your spouse try to keep you away from family and friends?Does your partner demean you for expressing yourself?
• Do you find yourself walking on eggshells around your spouse, afraid of upsetting him?
• Does your spouse ignore you, never listens to you, talks over you or always places his own needs above your needs?
• Does your relationship swing back and forth between a lot of emotional distance and being very close?
• Have you ever felt obligated to have sex, just to avoid an argument about it?
• Do you sometimes feel trapped in the relationship?
• Are you afraid of your partner?

          Emotional abuse affects a person’s self esteem. Emotional abuse may be accompanied by physical abuse, but does not have to be or it may be very subtle.Many women do not see it as abuse. It sometimes may be brushed off as the spouse being short tempered or that some people have a different personality.Many women suffer in silence thinking that it is her duty to save the abuser or to help him change. Many times, as helpless as she feels in the relationship, she also believes that she cannot live without him. This is because of the way he has manipulated her into a feeling of dependence on him.
It is very important to remember that just because there are no physical marks does not mean that abuse has not occurred. The effects of emotional abuse are just as devastating and can be even more long lasting than the effects of physical abuse. There are hotlines you can call for advice, and local counselors who can help with both individual and marital counseling. Never be afraid to reach out for help. You are not alone.

NUMBERS

Wanderings of a faithless generation

                                  The historical account of Numbers demonstrates God’s great mercy and forgiveness for his people despite their repeated rebellion, disobedience and complaining. Time and again the Israelites choose to disobey God rather than to submit to his will. Their lack of faith brings about the death of an entire generation and 40 years of wandering in the Sinai desert.
                                 The book of Numbers introduces some interesting women as it recounts the struggles and growth of the nation of Israel. Miriam, Moses’ sister, joins forces with their brother, Aaron, in a short – lived revolt against Moses’ leadership. God’s judgment on their insurrection is visible and instantaneous, as Miriam is stricken with leprosy. Yet God also demonstrates his mercy when he forgives their sin, heals Mariam and restores the sister and brother to the community (Nu 12). Zelophehad’s daughters take center stage when Israelites receive their land allocations. In a patriarchal society these brave women discover that they are not second- class citizens in God’s economy (Nu 27). Numbers also reminds us that God holds women, as well as men, accountable when it comes to sexual immorality and unfaithfulness in marriage (Nu 5).                      
                             Forty years of wandering in the desert provide ample opportunity for God’s people to learn to trust him in every circumstance. The Israelites’ example in Numbers assures us that God’s purposes will not be thwarted. With our eyes focused on God’s promises and on his eternal faithfulness, we can face our futures with courage, what God says, he will do. You can read the whole book here.

Growing Shallots

Oh soo yummy!

My hubby gubby planted these shallots. That was his first 'gardening act' and he was super excited:) Well after that I adopted them and took care of them- showed em lota luvvv ! They grew quickly and the whole patch was green so quickly. They looked very pretty and lush!! I couldnt wait to chop em up and use them in my cooking:) They are fairly easy to grow and are soooo tasty when eaten fresh. Store bought ones dont do justice to it. I loved them in my fried rice that I made right away after I harvested em:)

 Heres how hubby planted them and I showed them love :)

• Shallots, like onions, thrive on well drained soil.
• I made holes and placed small shallot bulbs pointy end up. The tip of the bulb should be just above the surface of the ground. Placing the bulbs about (4-6") apart would give them enough room to grow well
• I watered the plants twice a day and removed the weeds faithfully. We have a bird feeder nearby and lotsa birds visit us so there were many weeds. Thats all you need to do to grow good shallots:)

Harvesting

When you notice your shallot leaves turning yellow, you can harvest them. Remove the whole plant out by digging the bulbs out. You can use the greens like you would use chives. And the bulbs should be allowed to dry for a couple of days and then you can store it in a dry place for further use. I also save the best bulbs for growing them next year.

Wycinanki also means "scissors cutting" and is a Polish style of papercutting. Heres what I created using this technique.

Shrimpy Zuchini

For the love of shrimp!!
Prep & Cooking: 15 mts
Serves 4 persons
Cuisine: Tamil Nadu

 

                           Zuchini was not available in India when I was growing up and havent seen many Indian dishes with this tasty vegetable. I love zuchini and shrimp(yumm) so I came up with this dish. The Indian spices blend sooo well and pop in your mouth. Every bite is uber yummy!!

Ingredients
1 lb. shrimp, peeled and deveined
1 zucchini, cubed
1  cup chopped onion
1/2 cup cubed tomato
1 tsp Ginger garlic paste
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 tsp cayenne pepper powder or to taste
1 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon salt or to taste
5 tablespoons olive oil

5 tablespoons fresh cilantro, chopped 1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/2 inch piece cinamon
2 cloves
2 cardamom

Procedure:

• Wash, drain and dry shrimp with paper towels.
• Heat olive oil in a large frying pan, add cinamon,cloves and cardamom. Add onion and saute untill it turns golden brown.
• Add ginger garlic paste and saute for few seconds.
• Now add the spices one by one stirring constantly, -cayenne pepper, turmeric powder, cumin
• Add the diced tomatoes and the shrimp. Cook covered for about 5 minutes under low heat..
• Remove the lid and add salt and adjust seasoning if necessary.  Set the heat to high and cook for 5 minutes.
• Season with chopped coriander leaves and add lemon juice before serving.
• Serve with Basmati rice or naan.

9/11 Tribute

       
                               Sheeba.......... Sheeba........ Wake up.... come and see this! My aunt woke me up. As I followed her I saw on TV a  plane explode into the Twin Towers, mobs of people covered in white ash running for their life, people jumping out of the windows to escape........ I remember tears rolling down my cheeks and freezing for a moment.... I knew things will not be the same... my life took a 90 degree turn after that, indeed it wasnt the same and it hasnt been the same ever!!!! Today I would like to share a video in remembrance of all those lives lost! My heart cries out for ALL the families that lost their loved ones. My prayers are with you.

Fenugreek

"Much Virtue in Herbs, little in Men."`Benjamin Franklin

Love this herb.....

 Many are not familiar with this herb. Fenugreek is used both as an herb (the leaves) and as a spice (the seed). It is frequently used in Indian curry.This was the first plant that I ever grew :) cos I heard from couple of my friends that they grow fast and need little attention :) Thus was born my passion for gardening .... very touching story eh?? Here are a couple of tips to grow fenugreek.

•  It likes full sun and well-drained, fertile, neutral to slightly acid soil.
•  It doesn't like to be transplanted.
•  In spring, after the threat of frost has passed, sow seeds to a depth of a little less than a quarter inch.
•  The seeds sprout quickly.
•  Space plants five to six inches apart.
•  Fenugreek grows to about two feet but the tender leaves are tastier. So I harvest them earlier.  .

Harvesting

Harvest the dry seedpods in early to mid fall, and store them in an airtight container in a dry, dark place. The leaves can be harvested when they are slightly dark green in color. I will be posting some recipes using these leaves and pods soon :) Have fun gardening :)

                               The book of Leviticus is a book about relationships: God’s relationship with his people and their relationships with each other. The laws and guidelines in Leviticus provide a formula for a holy lifestyle based on God’s principles. The laws cover every aspect of daily life, from worship on holy days to proper eating habits, from clothing to cleansing, from sexual activity to rewards for obedience and punishments for disobedience. Leviticus devoted several chapters to the Israelite system of sacrifices (Lev 1-7). These offerings were designed to remind the Israelites of their need for God’s love and forgiveness, while illustrating the essential characteristics of God’s nature. The intimately detailed rules for daily living found throughout Leviticus provide the regulations necessary to maintain order in Israelite society. In Leviticus we learn about God’s concerns for a proper diet ( Lev 1), his interest in the proper care of diseased skin (Lev 13-14), our natural bodily functions and God’s provision for cleansing ( Lev 15). The detailed list of sexual regulations and guidelines for moral behavior found in Leviticus 18-19 reveal not so much a God who is “picky” as a God who is intimately concerned with every aspect of life. Banana rice fritters with a drizzle of maple syrup (Nei Appam)

Prep & Cooking: 15 mts

Serves 4 persons

Cuisine: Tamil Nadu

                          


                                               Heres a quick south indian snack that will tickle your taste buds. My son luvs it and calls it sweet pakodi. I m sure you and your family will love it too.

Ingredients
Rice flour - 1 cup
Jaggery - 3/4 cup
Ripe banana - 3/4
Cardamom powder - 1 tsp
Egg - 1
Cashew Nuts -few
Rasins - few
Ghee - For frying
Drizzle of Maple syrup 


Procedure:

• Melt jaggery in a tbsp of water.
• Add rice flour and ripe banana to the melted jaggery and mix well.
• Add a beaten egg to the mixture.I should be like a pancake mixture.
• Gently stir in the cardamom powder, cashews and rasins.
• Heat oil in a pan and spoon-in the batter and fry the same, till golden brown to reddish brown.
• Drizzle some maple syrup and enjoy!!!

We played with bubbles and also went to the LA museum to see different kinds of bugs. I was also amazed at the live collection of bugs.

Growing Ichiban Japanese Eggplant

Gardening requires lots of water - most of it in the form of perspiration.  ~Lou Erickson

  

 Eggplant,Aubergine, Brinjal,  Kathrikai....... all the same- yummy fruit!!!???

Did you know that an eggplant is a fruit that is used as a vegetable. Its the small seeds in it that make it a fruit :). Most of us are familiar with the beautiful rich purple color of the eggplant. Eggplants are also called brinjal in India.Whether its a fruit/vegi or is called a brinjal or eggplant I love growing this plant and cooking with it. The eggplant in my lil Eden is growing rather quickly. It's flowers smile at me with such a pretty shade of purple. There are soo many flowers and lots of little eggplants. 

• Get some good Ichiban plant form the store
• Plant them 1 1/2 to 2 feet apart
• Water your plants one to two times per week

Tips for growing Ichiban eggplants.

• Choose a site where the plant will be exposed to a full day of sunlight,
  
• Do not use high nitrogen fertilizers, they will encourage foliage growth rather than fruit;
• Rinse  the eggplants with a full stream of water early in the day to remove them of amphids. I also use soapy water to get rid of these pesky amphids. Use no more than 1-2 cups of soap per gallon of water.
  
  
  

Harvesting

Eggplants can  be harvested any time after they have turned their deep purple color.The more frequently you pick the fruit, the more your plants will produce.I get about 2 to 4 pounds of fruit from each plant. Cooking it immedietly is the best way to go, but it can be kept in the fridge for about a week.

                       The Book of Exodus revolves around the deliverance of Gods people from slavery in Egypt and the establishment of God’s covenant with them at Sinai. Woven throughout the epic adventures of Exodus are glimpses of men and women whose love influenced a nation. Jochebed (EX 6:20) models the resourcefulness of a mother in crisis as she seeks to save her son from certain death (Ex 2:1-4). Pharaoh’s daughter unknowingly becomes a part of Israel’s deliverance when she shows compassion to an abandoned baby (2: 5-10). While her husband Moses stands in the limelight of leadership, Zipporah’s behind-the- scenes strength provides support for the one God has chosen to lead Israel ( Ex 4:18-26). Exodus traces God’s deliverance of his people (Ex 7-14), instilling hope in later generations when troubles overwhelm. We sing and dance for joy with Mirian and Moses after the crossing of the Red Sea (Ex 15:1-21). The establishment of the Sabbath and of the Israelite festivals reveals the benefits of rest and the joy to be found in celebration (Ex 23:10-19). We watch as the Israelites use their creative skills and give sacrificially in order to construct a tent of worship in the Sinai desert (Ex 25-28).
                    Ultimately the story of Exodus is the story of a relationship- a relationship with a God who never stops working through his people or listening to their prayers. That same God is our God today – ever present, ever faithful, never failing.
                     The stories in exodus ought to make one lesson clear : when it comes time to make a decision, a person can either obey God or plan on running into a lot of trouble.
